Hearing aids have transformed how people with hearing loss engage with the world around them. These compact devices are designed to enhance sound clarity, particularly for speech, making communication easier. Thanks to technological advancements, modern hearing aids now come with features that enhance speech clarity in noise and provide connectivity to other devices. If you’re considering your options, learning about the various types of hearing aids and their advantages can help you make a well-informed choice.
A hearing aid is a small electronic device with three key components: a microphone, an amplifier, and a receiver (speaker). It is designed to amplify specific sounds based on an individual’s unique hearing needs, focusing on clarity rather than just increasing overall volume. At Helix Hearing, we utilise the gold-standard practice of Real-Ear Measurements to objectively fit the hearing aids to a prescription based on the individual’s hearing levels, ensuring that the hearing aids provide clearer communication and a better quality of life.
Types of Hearing Aids
1. Behind-the-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aids
- Standard BTE: –
The electronic components rest behind the ear, connected to a custom ear mold via a standard tube. Ideal for those requiring higher amplification and/or assistance with handling hearing aids. - Slim Tube BTE: –
Similar to the standard BTE but uses a thinner tube for a more discreet appearance. Can be fitted with a custom tip or dome, depending on the severity of hearing loss. Often recommended for individuals dealing with moisture or earwax concerns.
2. Custom Hearing Aids
- Invisible-in-the-Canal (IIC) / Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC):
Small, custom-fit devices that sit deep inside the ear canal, making them nearly invisible. A great choice for those prioritising discretion. - In-the-Canal (ITC) / In-the-Ear (ITE):
Larger than IIC/CIC models, these hearing aids sit at the entrance of the ear canal. Suitable for individuals needing more amplification and/or preferring an easier-to-handle option.
3. Receiver-in-the-Canal (RIC) Hearing Aids
This style features electronics behind the ear with a thin wire leading to a speaker sitting within an earpiece in the ear canal. The earpiece can be a custom tip or a dome, depending on the severity of hearing loss. It combines versatility and discretion, making it a popular choice for various levels of hearing loss.
How to Choose the Right Hearing Aid
Selecting the right hearing aid requires careful consideration. Factors to keep in mind include:
- Hearing Loss Severity – The degree of hearing loss significantly influences the choice of hearing aid. Generally, more severe hearing losses require more amplification power, so the speaker component on the hearing aid is physically larger. The hearing aid may need to be larger to accommodate this. Milder hearing losses also may find limitations with Custom hearing aids, especially if the ear canal is small, as these devices occlude the whole ear canal, which can give the feeling of the ear being blocked for some people.
- Lifestyle and Communication Needs – Your daily activities and environments (e.g., noisy cafes, and quiet offices) determine the features you need.
- Dexterity and Comfort – Choose a model that is easy to handle and wear for extended periods, especially if you have dexterity or vision issues.
- Connectivity Features – Many modern hearing aids offer Bluetooth connectivity, allowing seamless integration with smartphones, computers, and TVs.
- Battery type – Hearing aids need batteries and can either use disposable zinc air button batteries of varying sizes that need frequent (weekly) replacing, or built-in lithium ion rechargeable batteries which require the hearing aids to be recharged nightly in a charger.
- Aesthetic Preferences – If discretion is important, consider smaller options like CIC or IIC models. Or if you want to be bold, we can also do bright, fun colours!
- Budget – Costs vary across brands and features. Independent providers like Helix Hearing offer transparent pricing and a wide range of options.
Fitting and Adjustment Process
The process of fitting a hearing aid involves multiple steps to ensure optimal performance and user satisfaction:
- Initial Consultation – Discuss your hearing test results and explore suitable hearing aids based on your needs.
- Needs Analysis – Evaluate communication goals, motivation levels, and specific environments where hearing improvement is essential.
- Device Selection – Your audiologist will recommend appropriate devices and help you choose a model tailored to your hearing profile, lifestyle, and budget.
- Fitting Appointment – The hearing aid is programmed and adjusted for comfort and clarity. You’ll also receive guidance on usage and maintenance.
- Follow-up Appointments – At least one check-in to allow for fine-tuning and addressing concerns, and overall evaluation of hearing aid outcomes.
- Annual Hearing Test and Hearing Aid Check-up – It is important to have an annual hearing test appointment to monitor your ear and hearing health. The hearing aids are checked and re-tuned at this appointment to ensure optimal ongoing benefit.
